Chapter 10

Alejo woke on Christmas morning, nestled against Bobby in a tumble of sheets and blankets. Sprawled on the white rug, both dogs emitted light snores. Chilly air licked across his back where the sheets had fallen away, and he curled up closer to Bobby, luxuriating in his body heat. Bobby stirred, waking as Alejo held him from behind.

“Do we have time for a shower?” Alejo asked.

“Let’s get our stuff in the car and see what’s up with Rafael first,” Bobby said.

It took only a few minutes to get dressed and pack their belongings. Trying not to make noise, they carried their suitcases through the silent house. The dogs padded alongside, toenails clicking on the tiles. Alejo’s watch read seven o’clock.

They eased open the front door. Light sparkled on the old patches of snow. They crossed the Japanese garden as the gnarled pine trees swayed in the breeze. Killer and Tank milled around, following scent trails but breaking away in time to catch up with Bobby and Alejo at the Lincoln. Alejo stowed their bags in the trunk while Bobby retrieved the dogs’ food and water supplies.

Alejo waited with the dogs at the car, picturing his parents ’ house on Christmas Day. Fragrant pine boughs tied with red ribbons. A Christmas tree studded withSarita’s ornament collection. A big wreath on the front door. Pork posole with red chile on the stove, its scent wafting everywhere. The TV showing sports or old movies while the radio played Christmas carols and rancheras. His parents, sisters, and sisters’ families would fill the house.

And he stood to lose all that if his family found out about him and Bobby. His mouth went dry with fear. He knelt and petted Killer, who leaned against him. Tank, the goof, got way too excited about Bobby coming back to sit still. He galloped back and forth between them, tongue flapping between rows of sharp teeth, as Bobby stuffed the dogs’ food and water supplies into the trunk alongside their suitcases.

“Well, now what?” Alejo asked. “I don’t think we should go wake them up.”

“ I agree. We want to keep Rafael in a good mood and cooperative.” Bobby clapped Alejo on the shoulder. “Let’s go for a thirty-minute run.” He laughed at Alejo’s expression of dismay. “Come on, it’ll be fun. Tank and I will set an easy pace for you and Killer. I promise.”

“Oh, right!” Alejo swatted him on the arm. “Killer and me, we’ll run rings around you.”
